Research into Film magazines

For our third artifact, we had to design a film magazine which would advertise and promote our film trailer.  We had to make the film magazines different to the film poster, but for it to still have continuity.
We firstly went out and bought different film magazines from music and film shops to look at for a wider choice of a research method.  We then scanned in the magazine into our blog and deconstructed them in the same way as our research into film posters.

Magazine research 1
The title for this magazine is in bold font and in the colour red to stand out and make it clear for the consumer.  The background image ties in with the text 'Transformers 3 strikes back!' Continuity with our advertising is important.  The colour scheme goes together and they have used 'fiery' colours such as orange, yellow and red.  The magazine has been split into three parts with the title and image at the top, then a divider in the middle, and then more text and images at the bottom.  The middle section has the use of Grey to make it clear.  They have used the idea of it looking like a film strip.  Images of other films which are due to be released or which are of a similar genre are used.  Exclamation marks have been used to make the text stand out more.  The bar-code has been placed in the corner.  Finally at the bottom, they have highlighted certain words in yellow which makes the whole mis-en-scene bold.

Magazine research 2

This magazine is interesting to look at as it has a lot to look at. Firstly the title is in a bold text with red colour, as the title reads 'Total Film'. From this we as the audience get the image that this magazine is powerful in having the best information for the reader, this from the connotation of the colour red, we can also gather that this magazine will have a variety of films inside that we would gather is of action genre. Additionally we gather from the image at the front that the target audience for this magazine is predominantly male orientated due to both characters being male and the colour scheme would stereotypically appeal to the male eye. This magazine layout is important to when we come to producing ours due to the title being at the top of the image with different taglines at the top which aim to advertise different films that are out this issue that would appeal to the target audience of the magazine. In the centre of the magazine appears to be a bulletin which is yellow, including the continuity of the magazine within its colour scheme of red, yellow and black. Inside this bulletin is a caption for the magazine as this is what the audience will first see when picking up the magazine, this is eye catching and catchy to read so therefore immediately will appeal to the audience. Alone the right side of this is the barcode, this is a code and convention of a magazine alongside the title as this is a necessary need for the magazine to be sold. Additionally along the bottom is a tagline with different images of films that are to be released, this would appeal due to people seeing their favourite actors/actresses and being advertised for the magazine as they would want to buy a magazine to read about the film they are in. We could learn from this magazine when looking at producing ours as we can now see some of the codes and conventions that our magazine would include, even though our magazine will be aimed at the target audience of teen girls for our film advertising package.

Magazine research 3
This magazine cover is a lot simpler, it is an international magazine.  We felt this wasn't a good example to base our ideas on as we would want ours to be more appealing like our research for magazine 1 and 2.  The colours are very simple, and the image is clear.  This could make the image more appealing to the audience for this magazine, as the audience might see him and as Woody Allen is famous, therefore the selling point is within him and the effect would be ruined if there were too many images. The colour scheme of this magazine is white, yellow and Grey with the main colour being yellow connoting either hope of cowardliness, this interpretation is then continued into the male on the cover who could be seen as standing in a cowardly position. This magazine also follows the codes and conventions of the title being at the top of the page and having a caption that would attract the audience in a large font with smaller stories underneath, just like the previous two magazines. We now know that for our magazine to look accurate we need to include these codes and conventions adapting them to our genre and audience.

IDEAS
Following our research into the codes and conventions of a film magazine we now have decided to adapt them to our genre of magazine and to help attract our target audience which is teen girls.

DESIGN 1

This was our first draft for our film magazine. We decided that the colour scheme should be the same to our film trailer and poster to keep continuity throughout. We wanted the parallel worlds to be more centered and to add text into the tag-line at the bottom as well as changing the text from the 'Perfect Guide' to 'Gourmet Guide' because it sounded more sophisticated and created the context that we wanted.

DESIGN 2

This was our second draft for our magazine cover, we decided that we wanted to change the line reading 'Geek world meets chique world'. Also we wanted to change the 'Easy A' because from our audience feedback people didn't know what this was so we changed it to a more well known chick flick that was suggested by our audience of 'Mean Girls'. Additionally we had made a spelling error in the word 'Interviews' at the bottom and we wanted to put '2011' instead of '2001' so we made these changes immediately. Additionally we added the text into the tag-line of this magazine and changed the text from 'Geek world meets chique world' to 'If the dope and the Diva Duel'.

FINAL DESIGN

This is our final magazine cover. We have created the title of WOW, we used this because it is short, sharp and descriptive. This would also be a chick flick magazine and therefore WOW created the right connotation for the codes and conventions.

The text we used for this to keep continuity though our three products and is the same as in both the film trailer and the film poster. Then we decided that we need a line about our magazine above the title as we found this from our research. This was to be creative and describe the magazine using alliteration effectively, so the 'Gourmet Guide' was a good use due to the meaning of the words giving the correct meaning we wanted for the magazine. We looked at the magazine 'Total Film' within our research and the yellow bulletin we adapted into a red heart again following the continuity from our film poster which we used hearts. Also the colour is the same as the geeky girls top therefore keeping to our planned colour scheme.

The geeky girl in this image is placed lower down than the gorgeous girl showing the superiority of the gorgeous girl as she points her lipstick (glamorous object) at the geeky girl in a domineering way showing that she could be the protagonist in the film. The geeky girl here is holding a teddy bear as if she would be looking for comfort and this is a childish manner, showing her naive ways. We used a caption from our film trailer in 'if the dope and the diva duel?' keeping continuity through the artifacts. This caption was also used due to the positioning of the characters we decided on of the geek being on the left side of the page with the word 'dope' by her, this leads the conclusions that the geek is the 'dope'. The word 'duel' is used again with the positioning of the characters with the gorgeous girl holding the lipstick up as if a sword to fight the geeky girl, this was the link we wished to create within the trailer. Following the codes and conventions of magazines, we then added a bar-code at the side and added a tag-line with things that would be included in the magazine, again keeping with continuity of using the red hearts like in the film poster and the bulletin. We used the fonts that had been used in the film trailer for the title 'Parallel worlds' which was with the 'Parallel' being in a geekier font and the 'Worlds' being in a more glamorous and stereotypical 'girly' font. Within the magazine we used these fonts to show the gorgeous and geeky worlds colliding in the magazine as this is a line within the trailer.

Finally, we decided to have the title of parallel worlds on a slant but still parallel in the centre of the magazine, between the two girls as this was to be slanted to leave a confused perspective on the image and have the audience thinking that this may be slanted following the duel that might take place to correct the balance of geek world and chique world.
